Nestled in the foothills of the Strathbogie Ranges, is the small town of Euroa. There are many larger towns in the Commonwealth, but none has produced as many Victoria Cross (VC) recipients as this small town.

Euroa is a pretty town of tree lined streets, and on a recent trip I decided to stop in at the relatively new VC Memorial Park overlooking the scenic Sevens Creek.

Residents of Euroa came together several years ago to devise a way of honouring the three Victoria Cross recipients from the local area – Euroa, Ruffy and Longwood, whose ultimate sacrifice in World War 1 saw the award bestowed upon them.

Today three bronze statues immortalising Corporal Alexander Burton, Lieutenant (later Major) Frederick Tubb and Lieutenant Leslie Maygar, as well as storyboards that tell the tales of these three brave men, stand in VC Memorial Park just a short stroll from the centre of town.

Getting to Euroa – Euroa is approx. 1 hour and 45 minutes drive from Melbourne along the Hume Highway and can also be accessed via train.
