Up and down, round and round, through the streets of Kyabram Town….I few weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit Kyabram in Northern Victoria. Located 200km north of Melbourne in the Goulburn Valley, Kyabram is the second largest town within the Shire of Campaspe with approx. 7300 people calling the town home.
On the late Spring Saturday morning I visited, the town was bustling with a number of specialty and general retail shops along with bakeries and cafes doing a good trade.
I took a little wander around town and soon came across the Kyabram war memorial. The war memorial was erected in 1922 and comprises a marble obelisk resting on four red pillars and a three-stepped base. It is dedicated to those locals who served in the first world war and lists the names of 63 locals who never returned home.
Across the road is the memorial gardens, a wonderful tree lined park – perfect to rest, and rejuvenate on a hot summers day.
Kyabram is probably best known for its Fauna Park located just out of town. The park covers approximately 55 hectares of open woodland, wetlands and lakes and is sure to keep the kids happy with the second largest collection of Australian Fauna in Victoria. Resident wildlife includes Koalas, Dingoes, Owls, Snakes, Wombats, Wallabies, Tasmanian Devils, Lizards and many species of birds. The park often offers Animal Encounter programs during the school holidays – check their website for details.Whilst I didn’t have the opportunity to visit this time, I will ensure I visit next time I’m back this way.
On the road back into town I spotted these guys. It never ceases to amaze me how some people can turn what looks to me like junk, into amazing sculptures and street art. This little rusty family look happy enough.
For fishermen, Kyabram is located close to several waterways including the Murray River, Goulburn River and Campaspe River – all of which provide wonderful opportunities to catch your dinner.
The Kyabram Town Hall is home to the local Art Gallery and the Isobel Harvie Collection of Victorian and Edwardian historic clothing. Isobel and Keith Harvie made a generous donation in March 2013 to the Town of Kyabram on the condition that a permanent home could be found for Isobels extensive collection. Kyabram is an ideal place to visit and stay awhile with a number of accommodation options from motels, B&B’s to caravan parks.
